Great show that no one saw

Alright. Tonight I saw one of the tightest bands I've ever heard. It was the Alex Torres & The Latin Kings, a Latin jazz band. They were awesome! Great horn section, spot on harmonies and great energy. It's a shame that there weren't that many people there. It was right next to Littell and free.

Keep an eye out for more free concerts on campus. They get really good groups to play!

In 7 days a video game is coming out. I have been watching this game since it was announced at E3 09. This game is DJ Hero. Now you may be saying "Another 'Hero' game? I gave up after Guitar Hero World Tour." Just take a look at this game. It's a whole new style of gaming. Look for it next week on the 27th.

This Tuesday, a man named Jim Deferio is coming to campus. Jim Deferio is no stranger to Oneonta. Ask any upperclassman and I'm sure they can tell you what happened. But to save you the effort of finding an upperclassman I'll tell you what happened.

Jim Deferio came to Oneonta and began an evangelical protests against the GLBT community. So what happened? The entire campus shared a moment of unity and protested against his hateful messages.

So when Jim Deferio comes back this Tuesday, show your support for the GLBT community and the entire OSC Campus!

• Monday, October 12 - Columbus Day: Registrar’s Office open. Classes resume.

• Tuesday, October 27 - Withdrawal deadline. Last day to drop full semester course.

Habitat for Humanity Golf Tournament

THE RICHARD A. COUCH MEMORIAL GOLF TOURNAMENT TO BENEFIT HABITAT FOR HUMANITY – SEPTEMBER 27

The Richard A. Couch Memorial Golf Tournament to benefit Habitat for Humanity will be held at the Oneonta Country Club on Sunday, September 27. Rich Couch, who passed away earlier this year, originally developed the fund raising tournament. Some of the funds raised will be contributed to his son’s college fund. The tournament begins with a Shotgun start at 1PM and ends with a buffet dinner catered by the Corfu Diner. Golfers are needed to compete for prizes, goodies and events. Individuals or teams of four many enter. The tournament is limited to 20 teams. A unique feature of our tournament is a prize for a hole-in-one of $15,000. All golfers will receive a golf club or bag. Sponsors are needed for snacks, prizes, grab bags, holes and carts. Habitat for Humanity builds houses in partnership with low-income families in Otsego County; proceeds will be used to purchase materials for our twenty-sixth home.

Hello Everybody! Saturday was a great day in Littell. In fact it was a great day for anyone who likes music. They were first treated to a wonderful program hosted by RA Amy & RA Eric. Then Lupe Fiasco performed at the Dewar Arena in Alumni Field House. But I want to take a moment to talk about the concert that was held here in Littell.

RA Amy & RA Eric held a program in the Pit Lounge on Saturday afternoon. The program was "Rock To Cure", a rock concert to raise awareness of cancer and of the on-campus club dedicated to fighting cancer with music, Rock to Cure. The talent was provided by a several generations of Littell Residents.

Eternity's End started and ended the event. They rocked the house with covers of Linkin Park and Alice in Chains, and also rocked out to some original material. Members of the group all lived in Littell two years ago in 2007-2008.

INDIGENOUS ARTIST/ACTIVIST L. FRANK TO GIVE TALK – MARCH 23
L. Frank, a Tongva/Acjachemem artist, tribal scholar and community activist, will give a talk entitled, The
Continuance of Indigenous California: History, Politics, Art, on Monday, March 23, at 7PM, at the Center
for Multicultural Experiences, Lee Hall. She is Board Member of the California Indian Basketweavers
Association, the Advocates for Indigenous California Language Survival, and the Native California
Network, organizations that are involved in the preservation and revival of Native Californian languages
and cultures through conferences, workshops and traditional arts practices. Her long running
column/graphic, Acorn Soup, was a staple in the quarterly journal, News from Native California and her
most recent graphic work appears as Second Serving. Her photographs, paintings, and sculpture have
been exhibited widely throughout California and the country. This event is made possible with funding
from the Office of Equity and Inclusion, Women's and Gender Studies, and the Center for Multicultural

RED DRAGON RENDEZVOUS CHANGE OF VENUE – MARCH 23
The location for the last Red Dragon Rendezvous this semester, has been changed to the Basement
Level of Milne Library, in the corridor leading to the Technology Center. It is scheduled for Monday,

UUP AND CSEA VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR SATURDAY’S BREAD - APRIL 4
On Saturday, April 4, UUP and CSEA volunteers will again staff Saturday’s Bread, a community
kitchen that dispenses hot meals and good cheer. Linda Drake will as previously, co-ordinate our
chapter’s participation in this worthwhile community service. Although Saturday’s Bread is housed at
the First United Methodist Church, 66 Chestnut Street, Oneonta, the program is a nondenominational
and humanitarian service open to all. To be part of the CSEA and UUP volunteer group
at Saturday’s Bread, you must be willing to work from 9 AM to 2 PM. As we need an exact list of the
names and numbers of participants, please e-mail Linda at drakelm@oneonta.edu, to volunteer. When
you contacther, please provide her with your full name, e-mail, and telephone number.

NEW YORK CITY BUS TRIP – MAY 30
CSEA is sponsoring a bus trip to New York City on Saturday, May 30. The bus will leave the Hunt
College Union at 7AM and leave Manhattan at 8PM. There will be one drop-off and pick-up location at
Bryant Park, 42nd Street and 6th Avenue. Riders will be free to do as they please while in the city. The
cost of the trip is $30 for CSEA Local 635 members and $35 for all others. Registration is open to
CSEA members through Wednesday, April 15, and then opens to all others thereafter. For
registration information, please contact Veronica Diver at diverv@oneonta.edu.

The Center for Social Responsibility and Community has scheduled an American Red Cross Blood Drive
for Thursday, March 5, at the Hunt Union Waterfront from 12noon to 5PM. A $350 scholarship has
been promised by Red Cross to be awarded to one lucky student if we reach our goal of 372 pints for this
academic year. SUNY faculty and staff are being asked to donate blood as well. Donors may register
during lunch and dinner hours at Mills or Wilsbach on March 2, 3 or 4 or by phoning a CSRC Student

4TH ANNUAL PHYSIQUE COMPETITION – MARCH 13
The Educational Opportunity Program/Student Opportunities Committee proudly presents the 4th Annual
Physique Competition on Friday, March 13 at 7PM in the Goodrich Theatre, Fine Arts. Tickets are $3
in advance and $4 at the door. All members of the Oneonta Community are invited. This competition
serves as the Student Opportunities Committee fundraiser. Ticket proceeds will go towards funding
educational, social and cultural events for students who may otherwise be unable to attend. Several
Oneonta students work hard for this competition so come out and show your support! Tickets are
available in advance at 332 Netzer Administration Building.

Put some spring in someone’s life! The American Cancer Society’s Daffodil Days are almost here.
Throughout the week of March 16, daffodil gift orders will be distributed here on campus. You can order
a “Bunch” @ $10 or a “Bear & a Bunch” (Boyd’s Teddy Bear) @ $25 for that special someone. Each gift
will contain a personal message—a message from YOU, if you choose to join in the fun! To place an

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SKY WARNING TRAINING

The National Weather Service will offer its Basic Sky Warning Training
program on campus on March 3, 2009, in two sessions in the Alumni Hall
Little Theater. One session will be offered from 3:30-5:30 pm and the
other from 6:30-8:30 pm. The Basic Sky Warning Training program is the
final step in the process for SUNY Oneonta to become a storm-ready

Mission Statement
Milne Library contributes to the overall mission of the college by providing resources and services to meet the intellectual and academic needs of students, faculty, and staff. Our primary focus is to support the instructional program of the college. When possible, the library extends services to those outside the college community.

Continuing goals:
1. To select, acquire, organize and maintain the information resources in all formats that best support the needs of the college community; to access resources beyond the immediate collection through interlibrary loan and electronic retrieval systems; to incorporate technology wherever appropriate to expand the library's collection and services.

2. To provide quality reference service by assisting and instructing library users in identifying, locating, evaluating and using information resources.

3. To teach classes that prepare students to retrieve and evaluate information for their college studies as well as for lifelong learning.

4. To provide access to resources with a broad range of perspectives, viewpoints, and approaches in keeping with the College's commitment to a climate of diversity.

MOVIE AND DISCUSSION – FEBRUARY 12
Women’s and Gender Studies is pleased to present the movie Under the Same Moon, with a discussion
following the viewing on Thursday, February 12 at 7PM in the Red Dragon Theater, Hunt College
Union. Karina Céspedes will introduce the film and lead the discussion. This film dramatizes the
countless Mexican families who leave their children behind, and sneak across the border to jobs that
offer them much more income in comparison with what they make in their own country. All are invited to

The next Red Dragon Rendezvous is scheduled for Monday, February 16 from 8:30-10AM, in
the International Lounge, Hunt College Union. Enjoy a cup of coffee, tea or other beverage,
and pastries, and informally interact, connect and meet members of the Campus Community

TWO-DAY BLOOD DRIVE AT HUNT UNION BALLROOM FEBRUARY 16 & 17
The Center for Social Responsibility and Community (CSRC) is sponsoring American Red Cross Blood
Drives at the Hunt College Union Ballroom on Monday & Tuesday, February 16 & 17, from 12noon
to 5PM. Red Cross has promised to award a $350 scholarship to one lucky SUNY College at Oneonta
student if we reach our goal of 372 pints for this academic year. Faculty and staff are invited to sign up
to donate blood as well. Donors may register during lunch and dinner hours at Mills or Wilsbach each
day Monday-Friday, February 9-13, or by phoning a CSRC Student Coordinator at x2098 to schedule
an appointment. Please give the Gift of Life and donate blood on the 16th or 17th!

The afternoon’s festivities will run from 1-5 PM beginning with the hunt for the Yule log. Once the Yule fire has been lit there will be a variety of activities offered in the lodge and storytelling will go on in the longhouse. Travel down to the Catskills for a wonderful day hike to the summit of Hunter Mt. As the second tallest peak in the Catskill range, the fire tower atop the peak affords a magnificent 360 degree view of the northern & central range. The hike follows the old road up to the ranger’s cabin and is rocky throughout with a few moderately steep sections. Participants should be in reasonable shape to enjoy this hike. College Camp to Offer Owl Program

The SUNY College at Oneonta will offer "Owls of Upstate New York," a presentation by the Wildlife Learning Company featuring live owls, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 18, at the College Camp lodge off upper East Street in Oneonta. Admission to the event is free, and members of the community are invited to attend.

The College Camp is a collaborative effort of the SUNY-Oneonta Student Association, the College, and Oneonta Auxiliary Services. More information about the presentation on owls is available from Snapper Petta, the College's Director of Outdoor Programs, at (607) 436-3455.

¨ Rock Climbing to Moss Island—Leave Campus at 8 AM

Join us for the first day of the break as we go rock climbing to Little Falls, NY. We will leave campus at 8AM for a day of top roping and possibly some bouldering with the staff of the Clark Sports Center. Cost for the trip is only $20.00 and includes all instruction, equipment, your day use climbing permit and transportation. You can register for this trip in the ORC. Also on October 7, “Coming Out Stories” will be presented in the Union Square of Hunt Union at 7pm. Faculty, staff, and students will share their stories of coming out as LGBTQQA (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered, Queer, Questioning, or Ally). Oneonta Coming Out Day will be celebrated 12-3pm on the quad on Wednesday, October 8. Visit the Residence Life Multicultural Committee’s closet and sign Open Minded Unity’s ally pledge. ¨ Lean-to Service Hike

Give back something to the environment and join us when we hike in to the Shandaken lean-to for the annual fall inspection. We will leave campus at 8 AM to hike the two miles into the shelter. There we will perform the usual jobs; clean out the fire pit, pick up garbage, police the site, etc. This is a relatively easy walk that has numerous stream crossings along the way. Everyone is welcome to join us on this trip and you can earn volunteer credits with the Center for Social Responsibility & Community for your involvement in the day. You can register for this trip in the ORC with your $5.00 refundable deposit through Friday, October 3rd or until all spots are filled.

The mission of the Oneonta Safe Space Program is to support the campus in its effort to foster a bias-free learning and working environment for LGBTQ persons by providing education and training for the campus community. The Oneonta Safe Space Program will build awareness of the issues affecting LGBTQ persons as well as develop skills for allies. The program works to create more campus spaces where LGBTQ persons and their allies feel safe, supported, and valued as members of our college community.

Hop into your bathroom and grab the empty toilet paper rolls you find. Personalize them as you wish and apply some 3m poster tabs to the back. Put it on the wall near your cleaning supplies or near your closet and put all of the extra bags you get from Mills and WalMart inside for a nice little bag holder.

Voter Registration and Meetings with Regional Political Figures

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- A coalition of four student groups at the SUNY College at Oneonta is sponsoring a voter registration drive and campus meetings with several prominent political figures from the region. Admission to all of the events is complimentary, and members of the community are invited to attend.

On Monday, September 22, at 7 p.m., Donald Barber, candidate for the New York State Senate in the 51st District, will appear at the Union Square in the Hunt College Union.

On Thursday, September 25, former Oneonta Mayor Kim Muller will lead a Voter Registration Workshop at 2 p.m. in the Union Square of the Hunt College Union. Voter registration drives will also be held in the main quad of the SUNY Oneonta campus on September 29 and 30 and October 1.

On Monday, September 29, at 7 p.m., New York State Senator James Seward of the 51st District will appear in the Craven Lounge of the Morris Conference Center.

On Monday, October 6, at 7 p.m., Oneonta Mayor John Nader will speak on the topic of "Think Again" in the Red Dragon Theater of the Hunt College Union.

The events in the series are designed to acquaint students with local candidates and representatives and to encourage political involvement among students.

The series is sponsored by Students Alternative Voice, the Political Science Club, Open Minded Unity, and Democracy Matters, all of which are supported by the SUNY Oneonta Student Association.

Brockport student in critical condition after fall

Brockport police are investigating an accident that seriously injured an 18 year old freshman, which occurred Friday, Sept. 5 at 2:12 a.m. Bryan C. Parslow fell from a second story window at 172 Main St., commonly known as The Roxbury. Parslow sustained serious neck and back injuries and possible paralysis.

Police were called to the rooming house, which is currently occupied by The Sammies, an off-campus group modeled after Sigma Alpha Mu, a national fraternity. Parslow fell from a second-story bathroom double-hung, single pane window, approximately 20-feet high. Witnesses say Parslow was vomiting out the window.

When police arrived, Parslow was on the ground outside The Roxbury. According to witnesses, Parslow was conscious after the fall, and received first-aid at the scene before help arrived.

“Unfortunately, this individual sustained serious injuries to the neck and back,” Brockport Police Chief Daniel Varrenti said. Parslow was transported to Strong Hospital via Monroe Ambulance. The victim is in serious condition and has been placed in a medical coma, which he awoke from Monday, Sept. 8.

“He’s not in good shape,” Varrenti said.

Though the events of the night remain unclear to police and investigators, it appears as if there was a large party with upwards of 70 people in attendance.

“There was a considerable amount of alcohol being consumed and served,” Varrenti said.

No charges have been filed though it is expected that the supplier of the alcohol will be charged for serving a minor.

Upon completion, applications must be mailed to your county board no later than the seventh day before the election or delivered in person no later than the day before the election.

You may also request an Absentee Ballot by sending a letter to your county board of elections. The letter must be received by your county board no earlier than 30 days and no later than seven days before the election. The letter must contain the following information:

*the address where you are registered
*an address where the ballot is to be sent
*the reason for the request, and
*the signature of the voter
An application form will be mailed with your ballot. The application form must be completed and returned with your ballot.

If you cannot pick up your ballot, or will not be able to receive it through the mail, you have the right to designate someone to pick it up for you. Only that person designated on your application may pick up and deliver your ballot.

If you are permanently ill or disabled, you have the right to receive an Absentee Ballot for each subsequent election without further application. Simply file an application with your board of elections containing a statement which describes the particulars of your illness or disability. The Board will review the facts stated, and if satisfied, will mark your registration record. You will then automatically receive an absentee ballot for every election until your registration is canceled.

Tips for Talking to Your Partner About Sex, Safer Sex, and Choosing Not to Have Sex

Whether it’s your first time or you’ve been together for years, talking with your partner about sex can seem hard. We are afraid to be assertive and to admit our concerns or fears. We’re worried that we might offend someone we care about, or that by bring up safer sex they’ll think we don’t trust them and get angry. Or, we may just be uncomfortable talking about sex at all, especially since in many cultures it’s the most taboo of subjects.

But communication is one of the most powerful tools we have to protect ourselves. Being open and honest about your and your partner's sexual history shows that you do trust each other – and that you care about one another's health and well-being.

Talk about whether you want to have sex. If you do want to, talk about what you’re comfortable doing and what you’re not. Discuss safer sex. Ask about your partner’s sexual history. Be willing to tell someone when you got tested, and ask the same question of him or her.

Negotiating safer sex is a conversation that every couple needs to have, and here’s how to go about doing it. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

*Choose a convenient time when you will both be free of distractions. It’s easier to have an open and honest conversation when you are both free to focus on the discussion – not when you’re caught up in the heat of the moment.

*Choose a relaxing environment in a neutral location, like a coffee bar or a park, where neither of you will feel pressured.

*Use "I" statements when talking. For example, I feel that choosing not to have sex is right for me at this time. Or, I would feel more comfortable if we used a condom.

*Be assertive! Do not let fear of how your partner might react stop you from talking with him/her.

*Be a good listener. Let your partner know that you hear, understand, and care about what she/he is saying and feeling.

*Be "ask-able"—let your partner know you are open to questions and that you won't jump on him/her or be offended by questions.

*Be patient with your partner, and remain firm in your decision that talking is important.

*Recognize your limits. You can't communicate alone or protect you both alone, and you don't have to know all the answers.

*Understand that success in talking does not mean one person getting the other person to do something. It means that you both have said what you think and feel respectfully and honestly and that you have both listened respectfully to the other.

*Get information to help you each make informed decisions.

*Avoid making assumptions. Ask open-ended questions to discuss your expectations for the relationship, past and present sexual relationships, contraceptive use, and testing for STIs, including HIV, among other issues. For example, What do you think about our agreeing to avoid sex until after we graduate? Or, What do you think about our using hormonal contraception as well as condoms? Not, Did you get the condoms? Or, When will you have sex with me?

*It’s okay if you don’t understand something right away. Try asking more questions, or asking the same question in a few different ways. Ask questions to clarify what you believe you heard. For example, I think you said that you want us to use both condoms and birth control pills? Is that right? Or, I think you want us both to wait until we graduate to have sex? Is that right?

*Avoid judging, labeling, blaming, threatening or bribing your partner. Don't let your partner judge, label, blame, threaten, or bribe you.

*Do not wait until you become sexually intimate to discuss safer sex with your partner. In the heat of the moment, you and your partner may be unable to talk effectively.

*Stick by your decision. Don't be swayed by lines like, If you loved me, you would have sex with me. Or, If you loved me, you would trust me and not use a condom.

A bulletin board will be going up in the first floor lounge in the next week that will help you determine your favored candidate. There will also be instructions on how to fill out your electronic ballot and where to pick up a stamped, addressed envelope to mail in your registration.

You should plan to have your registration postmarked by October 1 to make sure it gets to the NYS Board of Elections on time. Please see RD Kirsten if you have questions about this whole thing. She doesn't care who you vote for, just as long as you participate in the policital process. Remember: if you don't vote, you can't bitch about the result. Them's the rulez.

Mensa was founded in England in 1946 by Roland Berrill, a barrister, and Dr. Lance Ware, a scientist and lawyer. They had the idea of forming a society for bright people, the only qualification for membership of which was a high IQ.
